Greens have lift-off!

St Helens Green Party launched its election campaign in style on Good Friday, with an evening of rousing folk music and spellbinding poetry at the town's Cinema Bar.

The lyrical genius of contemporary poets Laura Taylor and Joy France entertained a captivated audience, before singer-songwriter Emma Runswick and local folk-rockers Merry Hell raised the roof with two stunning sets.

In between, the audience heard from the Greens' local parliamentary candidates Elizabeth Ward and Dr James Chan, as well as borough council candidate Francis Williams.

St Helens South & Whiston candidate, James Chan, said:

"This was an amazing evening and we're really grateful to Laura, Joy, Merry Hell and, of course, Cinema Bar for being such wonderful hosts.

"People tell me that I'm brave for standing for the Green Party in such a traditional Labour stronghold, but I'm constantly encouraged by what I'm hearing on the doorstep and in the town centre. Voting Green is not a wasted vote in this town.

Elizabeth Ward, added:

"It's healthy for democracy that voters have real choice, so my message to everyone is 'vote for what you believe in'. And if you believe in people before profit, the common good before the privileged few, and a secure future over short term gain, then the Green party is for you."

Both Elizabeth Ward and James Chan are looking forward to debating with the other candidates and discussing with the public at the hustings organised by SHINE (St Helens Interfaith Network) on 17th April, 7.30pm at St Helens Parish Church.
