The St.Helens Green Party Responds to Brexit

3 July 2016

The people of St Helens have spoken and a solid majority want out of the EU.  The St Helens Green Party thinks this was a huge mistake.  We campaigned hard for Remain – not for the sake of the establishment, big banks and financiers, but for the sake of workers’ rights, women’s rights, the environment, the purchasing power of ordinary people’s pay packets and a more tolerant society which looks out for the needs of everyone, not a greedy few.

In the past two years, we have seen just how destructive the policies of a Tory-only government can be for those of us not lucky enough to have been born with a silver spoon in our mouths.  We firmly believe that the pain and anger expressed by many of the people who voted Leave is due to the Conservative Party’s discredited trickle-down economics and heartless austerity.  We also believe that the likes of Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Teresa May and Nigel Farage will never organize our exit from the EU in a way that puts the needs of ordinary people above those of the large financial institutions and their fat-cat buddies.

In the aftermath of the vote, we are shocked to see that those leading the Leave campaign do not have the slightest idea of what they really want to negotiate with the EU, let alone how to do this.  All of their fine promises are dissolving faster than mist on a sunny morning.  The awful truth is that they simply have no idea of how to proceed…and don’t appear to have every given the matter any serious thought.

We were also appalled by the lacklustre support given to the Remain campaign by Jeremy Corbyn.  It is up to the his party to decide whether he stays as leader or goes, but in our view the way he and his inner circle sabotaged Labour’s efforts to educate their supporters about the importance of the EU to workers in the UK is problematic at best.

As we said, however, the people of the UK have spoken, and this is a result we have to live with.  We of the Green Party will be working as hard as we can to make sure that we have a “People’s Brexit,” one that will put the needs of ordinary citizens first.

We know for certain that the Tories will not.
