Down, but not out

"Thank you for voting for the common good."

That's the message from St Helens Green party to the 2,500-plus people who voted Green at last week's local council elections.

The party failed to win a seat, but came ahead of the Liberal Democrats in six of the 10 seats contested by both parties in an election won convincingly by Labour.

Windle candidate and vice-chair, Francis Williams, said:

"We would like to thank the many hundreds of people who stuck by us and voted for the common good in an election dominated by the politics of fear and hatred.

"Naturally we're disappointed, but we feel that St Helens is the loser when two out of three people don't bother to vote, and we continue to have a council administration devoid of ideas and with little public support.

"We will fight harder now for communities across the borough, especially those in Sutton, Newton-le-Willows and Bold who could soon find themselves in the frontline against fracking.

"And we will continue to push for policies that make a real difference to people's lives and our precious environment. Fighting poverty and restoring democracy matter more than ever."
