Energy price hikes make Green New Deal a priority

19 June 2011

Rising energy prices and the spectre of increasing fuel poverty in St Helens mean a Green New Deal for Britain is now more urgent than ever.

That’s the view of St Helens Green Party, which is calling for more investment locally and nationally in job-creating, energy-saving home insulation programmes.

Households in St Helens are considered to be in fuel poverty if they have to spend more than 10% of their household income on fuel just to keep their home in a 'satisfactory condition'.

St Helens Green Party's Francis Williams says:

"Rising fuel costs mean that we simply can’t afford to take warm homes for granted. Local householders are losing thousands of pounds and risking serious ill-health through inadequate insulation.

“Energy prices aren’t going to come down so we have to find another way to lower bills. The Green Party believes that a free insulation scheme for every household that needs it is the best way forward.

“Investing in energy efficiency is a win-win situation. It helps reduce fuel poverty, tackle climate change, creates employment and generates money for the local economy.”

The Green Party has the following energy-saving tips for householders.

  • Check around your home for draughts and eliminate them.
  • Use only energy-saving light bulbs.
  • Properly insulate your hot water tank.
  • Insulating your loft.
  • Insulate wall cavities.
  • Switch to a more efficient condensing boiler.
  • Look for the Energy Saving Trust logo when purchasing new appliances.
  • Install double glazing.
