HAPPY CHRISTMAS from St Helens Green Party

Christmas is coming and St Helens Green Party has come up with 12 handy hints to help make this one the greenest yet.

1. Support our local economy and buy local for food and gifts.

2. When shopping for food or buying presents, don’t forget your long-life shopping bags and avoid excessive packaging.

3. For the person who really does have everything, why not make a donation to their favourite charity?

4. Only buy the food you really need and get creative with your left overs – visit

lovefoodhatewaste.com for more.

5. Buy gifts, wrapping paper and cards made from recycled materials.

6. Keep your curtains closed to keep heat in and cold out.

7. Recycle your used batteries and only buy re-chargeable ones next time around.

8. Cards, wrapping paper, tree, cans and bottles….recycle or re-use as much as you can –visit sthelens.gov.uk for details.

9. Give garden birds a break by putting nuts and bird seed out for them to eat, and water for them to drink.

10. Compost all your food peelings or get a wormery to help break down the vegetable food waste into rich soil nutrition.

11. Use only long-lasting, energy efficient lights on your Christmas tree and around your home.

12. Make a resolution to be even greener in 2013.
